1st – 3rd May 2010
A three-day celebration of brass-band music.
Come to be inspired, to take part and to learn, or just to listen and enjoy!
The festival’s inspiration is the hugely popular 1996 film Brassed Off. The festival’s centrepiece is a massed bands performance on Sunday 2 May by all five of York’s brass bands – playing together for the first time – in a concert of music from the film.
Other brass players are invited to join in but you must register in advance. The concert is at 2.00pm in York’s Museum Gardens, with a full rehearsal in the morning at Bootham School (we will stay at the school for the performance if wet). If you’re coming to listen, bring a rug and your own refreshments – this is set to be this year’s York Proms! Even better, admission is FREE!
The programme for the weekend contains something for everyone: from a fun introduction to the brass band (and the chance to try out a brass instrument for yourself) to a masterclass led by players from the world-famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band; a showcase of York’s bands and a special screening of Brassed Off at City Screen followed by a question and answer session with the film’s York-based writer-director, Mark Herman.
The York bands playing and represented :

- York Railway Institute Golden Rail Band
- Shepherd Group Brass Band

when you’re near that sound, it doesn’t half grab you’
